When and Why Your Vacation Rental Needs a Deep Clean

A turnover prepares a rental for its next guest. A deep clean addresses additional buildup and detailed tasks that may need a larger work window. Both should have a written scope so the host and cleaning team know what is included.

Start with a property inspection

Look at appliance interiors, cabinet fronts, baseboards, window tracks, vent covers, and areas beneath accessible furniture. Note stains, persistent odors, residue, and any maintenance problems separately. Cleaning does not replace repairs or specialist work.

Photograph the areas that need attention and share the list when requesting a quote. This helps the provider allow enough time and identify work requiring special equipment or a separate contractor.

Possible kitchen and bathroom tasks

Depending on the agreed scope, a deep clean may include appliance interiors, accessible cabinet interiors, tile and grout cleaning, and buildup around fixtures. Empty areas that must be cleaned and clarify who will move stored items.

Follow product labels and surface-care instructions. Do not mix cleaning products. Moving heavy appliances, repairing caulk, addressing suspected mold, or servicing ventilation equipment may require qualified help and should not be assumed to be part of cleaning.

Bedrooms and living spaces

Consider dust on trim and reachable fixtures, accessible areas under furniture, and fabric items that need washing according to their care labels. Mattress care, upholstery extraction, carpet treatments, and window work should be discussed explicitly. Not every cleaner provides every specialist service.

Choose a schedule based on actual condition

There is no single interval that suits every rental. Occupancy, pets, cooking, property finishes, and the normal turnover scope all affect how quickly buildup appears. Inspect regularly and use that record to decide when detailed work is needed.

Arrange a booking gap long enough for the agreed work and any necessary drying time. Confirm access, supplies, utility availability, and who checks the result before the next guest arrives.

Get a written quote

Deep-cleaning prices depend on the condition and scope. Ask the provider to list included tasks, exclusions, expected duration, and any separate charges. This article does not provide current local market rates or a fixed Quality Turn price.

Afterward, record what was completed and any repairs still needed. Use those notes to keep the turnover checklist realistic and plan future maintenance.

Prepare the property and close out the work

Send the provider a room-by-room list before requesting a date. Mark items that need the home empty, furniture moved, power disconnected, or specialist equipment. Confirm who will move belongings and whether the property needs extra drying or ventilation time before guests return.

Area Detail to agree before the visit
Kitchen Which appliance interiors and cabinet interiors are included
Bathrooms Accessible buildup, surface condition, and maintenance concerns
Bedrooms Reachable areas behind furniture and fabric care requirements
Living areas Upholstery or carpet work needing a separate specialist
Completion Photos or walkthrough, unresolved items, and readiness time

After the visit, record completed tasks and anything left for repair or another contractor. Return the property to its normal turnover checklist; a deep clean does not replace cleaning between stays.

See Quality Turn's deep-cleaning service for planning the scope. If the property is changing occupants and will be empty, compare move-in and move-out cleaning. The cleaning cost guide explains how to compare quotes without mixing different scopes.
